Big on Rampage
Wow. I haven't written anything here in about six months. Coincidentally, I've been on my hottest gambling streak since I ran my Full Tilt account up to about 14K back around 2007. If you don't consider poker to be gambling, this is my hottest streak ever. I intend to backtrack from the present to cover it, though I won't make any promises.
The last couple of weeks I've found myself looking at a lot of old Pride fights involving Quentin "Rampage" Jackson, primarily because I've bet him at (-270) vs. Mohammed "King Mo" Lawal. The odds have dropped to (-250), and I've bet Rampage again.
The Pride fights are disturbing, in that they show a lot of Rampage rolling around on the ground, wrestling and grappling passably well, and very little of his explosive striking game, which apparently hadn't evolved yet 8-10 years ago. It's like watching UFC on valium. I already had my $$ down on Rampage before I watched these fights.
On the other hand, King Mo recently had to recover from a life-threatening staph infection, and apparently has altered his training because he is afraid a cut could give him another staph infection. I didn't know any of this when I bet either.
Watching old fights shows me a competent but uninspiring King Mo, while Rampage is pretty scary, or has been since he became a knock-out artist. Relative to other bets I've made lately, (-250) seems like a pretty good price.
I've parlayed Rampage with a couple of other fighters. I have Alexander Shlemenko(-485)over Tito Ortiz, and Michael Chandler(-1000) over Will Brooks. This pays a little better than 4/5. Brooks agreed to this fight one week ago, after Eddie Alvarez suffered a concussion. Alvarez-Chandler has already given us two good fights. I have no reason to think Brooks will measure up, though I must admit I have only watched one fight each of Chandler and Brooks. Chandler has finished 10 out of 12 of his victorious fights early, while most of Brooks' wins have been by decision.
Since this is a five round fight, and since I don't think Brooks will last that long, I have Chandler-Brooks UNDER 4.5 rounds(-260). I parlayed that with Shlemenko over Ortiz UNDER 2.5 rounds(-145), along with Rampage(-250)over King Mo. This pays about 9/4, and I suspect something will go wrong to torpedo this bet. At the same time, Vegas really doesn't seem to think two of these fights will go the distance, and I expect this is for a reason.
