Countdown to Detroit 0-2 Continues
I've already taken green bay(-3) over DETROIT, just in time to hear Dave & Cousin Sal both take the Lions, since they think gb(-3) is the fishy line for the week, where Vegas will clean up against the people picking the pack. Whoa, tongue twister! Do I feel like a traitor? No. These guys are Steeler and Cowboy fans, and do not truly understand the things that go through the heads of fans of truly miserable teams.
Not that I seek pity. It would be much more painful to be a fan of one of these teams. Especially these, since they have a history of teasing their fans and contending.* Heck, if the Lions lose tomorrow, I'm free to root for whomerver else I please. It's like being a widow, except Matt Millen is still alive. It's barely even a week since I stuck a Lions decal on my Chrysler, jinxing their season. The glue wasn't dry when I found out the Lions had been taking a beating for about 3 quarters. Folk down here cover their vehicles with decals, mostly Longhorns, Cowboys, and various Texas stickers, along with the rash of yellow ribbons you see everywhere else. If a Michigan plate on a rusty old Chrysler symbolizes futility, the Lions decal shows my embrace of that futility. Sort of like a McCain-Pailin sticker. No, that would be more like a sticker reading "Give Matt Millen a Raise."
Where was I? Right. Following the Tigers the last couple of years has been far more frustrating than following the Lions. The Tigers reek of opportunities lost. The Lions just reek.
Speaking of reeking...Cal started me off on the wrong foot yesterday. They trailed Maryland 21-6, before roaring back to lose 35-27. Even with the tease bringing the line down to Cal by nine, this wasn't close.
That result invalidated the other half of my tease, where Georgia held on to beat South Carolina 14-7, justifying my tease, as Georgia covered the two, but not the eight.
Meanwhile, Michigan State justified my wish to tease them, winning 17-0, and failing to cover the 18.5 point spread. I should have walked away, or took them when the line was 17. Apparently Michigan State was at home. Not sure how I confused that, but I need to keep it from happening again.
Michigan and Notre Dame showed us how to not play defense. Michigan also showed us how to turn the ball over six times, losing 35-17, bringing me to 0-3 on the afternoon. I forgot to mention the Lou Holtz statue in the pregame...I was aware of the dedication, but dismissed it as inconsequential, since Bo Schembechler's death before the Michigan Ohio State game did not inspire the Wolverines to win that. Apparently a speech from a live coach is more inspirational than a timely death. Or maybe inspiration counts for more when mediocre teams play each other--the good teams are already inspired.
Oklahoma hammered Washington, 55-14, covering the 21 point spread handily. Wisconsin held on to beat Fresno State 13-10, just covering the two points. The late games brought me back to 2-3 on the day.
The game I let the hype talk me out of came through, as USC handled Ohio State 35-3, covering the 11.5 to 12.5 points. I did, however, enjoy briefly rooting for Ohio State before they fell apart, something that would have been tainted had I bet on USC, much like my enjoyment of Michigan's loss was tainted by my bet on them.
Is Notre Dame back? Maybe back enough to trouble Michigan State, since we aren't that good. I talked to Pugilant Mick yesterday, and he'd already given up on them. Rooting against Notre Dame will be alot more fun if this win against Michigan revives his interest. I don't know if he'll be able to delude himself into thinking they have a shot against SC...the cupcakes coming up should help. I think State and Purdue are their toughest opponents until the Trojans, and there is an excellent chance that neither of them are for real.
In the pros, in addition to my packers(-3) pick, I'm taking ARIZONA(-7) over miami. I don't like to rely on the Cardinals for ANYTHING, but I'm still counting on the Fish sucking. I wonder if Chad Pennington will make me regret this. You don't have to be very good to deserve less than seven against the Cards.
Money has poured in on the Patriots. The Jets were favored by 2.5, and now are a point dog to the Pats. I was going to take the Pats, but I'm going to stay away from this one, now that I've lost 3.5 points.
I was going to take Baltimore (+4.5) at Houston, but hurricane Ike has caused the game to be postponed to Monday, which apparently prevents me from betting on it.
I don't like betting against the Broncos at home, but since San Diego won there 41-3 last year, I feel a little better about san diego(+1) over DENVER. Jay Cutler is getting better, and Shawne Merriman is out, but I like San Diego in what is getting called a must win. I suspect they could still catch Denver even if they got two behind, but the Chargers ought to be motivated this week.
*Aside from those years when they actually win it all, of course.
