ND over OSU, NFL Playoff Week 1 pix

Well, it's 2006, so you know what that means. A couple more bowl games and the NFL playoffs! Why else are New Years so happy? It looks like I'm going to take Notre Dame and the points. The line opened with Ohio State favored by 4, and now it's 5. I think this game will probably come down to the last posession, and neither one of these teams deserves to be favored by more than 3, 3.5. If ND was favored by 5 I would take OSU. I'd like to not bet on this game at all, just so I can watch it with my buddy who is a huge Notre Dame fan and continually fuck with him, but my pride as a handicapper won't let me. Besides, the game is taped in Korea, so that takes the fun out of it anyhow.

Meanwhile the playoff spreads are out. I said earlier today that I am generally happy if I can get 3 out of 4 of the first games correct, but then I thought about it, and decided that this is true anyway, not just week 1 of the playoffs. Bottom line, this year I think I'll be happy to go 2-2.
It sucks too, because I will be in the field for the rest of the playoffs, and won't be able to bet on these games. (Actually, I'll probably give my username & password on bet365 to my dad. Fuck it, he already has a general power of attorney.)

Anyway, I'm not getting much of a feel for these matchups.

I still might change my mind about these, but here goes.

NEWENGLAND-7.5 over jacksonville

I'm not crazy about giving 7.5 here, but Byron Leftwich is either (a) out, or (b) probably rusty, so, while we won't know if he is playing until about the day before, I have to take a Super Bowl Champion at home in the cold against a Florida team, even if they are 12-4. Oh, yeah, NewEngland came through for me against the Jets last week, 31-21. 12.5-6-1 on the year.

CINCINNATI+3 over pittsburgh

This is one hell of a matchup, and one I may decide to flip later, but right now I'm going with Cincy. Pittsburgh seems to have alot going for it, like playoff experience, momentum, and an actual defense. But Cincinnati can put points on the board, and their defense gets alot of turnovers, even if they can't really stop anybody. Pittsburgh will have a harder time keeping up if they get behind. We'll see.

NYGIANTS-3 over carolina

If this game was in Carolina I would probably take the Panthers. If it was at a neutral site I would probably take the Panthers. The Giants are 7-1 at home, (8-1 if you include their game against New Orleans) and the Panthers are inconsistant, and not so good against the run. Gotta take the home team here.

washington+2.5 over TAMPABAY

I'm still not convinced that the Redskins are better than Tampa Bay, but at this point they are probably playing better than the Bucs, and they are definitely better than I thought they were for most of the season. The Bucs are 4-1 their last 5 games, but 2 of these games were against the mighty Saints, and they barely pulled out the win against Atlanta.

I might change my mind on any of these last three picks, but since I consider them to all be tossups, I am happy to recieve points in two of them, and to have the home team in two of them. We'll see how happy I am next week.
